Kindle Channels

One of Amazon's most enduring products, the Kindle devices and apps provide readers with more than just books; they offer a suite of tools like X-Ray, Flashcards, and Notes & Highlights.

Timeline

2020–2021

Kindle users lacked a centralized, curated experience to discover and engage with a variety of Amazon products organized around their specific interests. Channels aimed to solve this. I picked the project up from another member of the design team and, working closely with my Product Manager, designed and implemented the end-to-end Channels experience:

  • Channel Pages: Intuitive design for topic-focused pages showcasing books, reviews, authors, magazines, toys, and more within a unified experience.
  • Detail pages: Created ingress points in the product detail pages for users to quickly view and following Channels that included what they were viewing.
  • Email Campaigns: Developed engaging email drips highlighting new releases and relevant articles to foster ongoing engagement.
  • Mobile Integration: Seamless integration with the Kindle mobile app, including tailored notifications to enhance on-the-go discovery.

Results

Channels had a successful launch with 30 Channels across Kindle topics in 2020, driving positive user reception. We began partnering with other Amazon teams to expand Channels' scope and include other products from across the site.
