Flocker Creator Storefronts

Flocker, a Bold Commerce labs project, offered e-commerce storefronts and custom merchandise tools for Twitch content creators. The goal was to reduce subscriber churn and provide incentives to their most loyal supporters.

Timeline

2018—2020

Following the public launch of Flocker in early 2019, I began a comprehensive analysis of how creators utilized the service, combining data analytics with direct outreach to collect feedback on both their experiences and those of their communities.

Our engagement with creators and an internal audit of the existing user experience unearthed several key issues:

  • The platform's design did not fully support creators who primarily used their landing page as a storefront, often disabling subscription and donation features.
  • Products often appeared near or below the fold, limiting visibility.
  • The shopping cart, presented as a Floating Action Button (FAB) on the page's bottom right, lacked immediate visibility for customers.
  • Product details, such as sizes and colours, were confined to modals, restricting the depth of information available to customers.

In response to these findings, I embarked on a comprehensive redesign of the UI, focusing on enhancing the visibility and accessibility of merchandise. Significant changes included:

  • Relocating the cart to the top right corner, aligning with familiar user navigation patterns.
  • Introducing a new button to display subscriber status on Twitch or facilitate quick subscription.
  • Elevating products to the top of the page and enriching listings with detailed information like types and sizes.
  • Repositioning subscription and donation widgets to the side, allowing for their deactivation without compromising the user experience.

Furthermore, I developed dedicated product pages for each item, moving away from the previous modal-based presentation. These pages provided extensive details on materials, fulfillment times, and care instructions, empowering buyers with comprehensive product insights without necessitating direct contact with support or creators.

Results

Early feedback from creators exposed to the revamped design was overwhelmingly positive, with anticipation for how these changes would enhance the user experience within their communities. Regrettably, due to the project's discontinuation in late 2020, I was unable to conduct formal testing to measure the impact on sales or conversions.
